Non-Gaussian statistics of pencil beam surveys

چکیده

We study the effect of the non-Gaussian clustering of galaxies on the statistics of pencil beam surveys. We find that the higher order moments of the galaxy distribution play an important role in the probability distribution for the power spectrum peaks. Taking into account the observed values for the kurtosis of galaxy distribution we derive the general probability distribution for the power spectrum modes in non-Gaussian models and show that the probability to obtain the 128h Mpc periodicity found in pencil beam surveys is raised by roughly one order of magnitude. The non-Gaussianity of the galaxy distribution is however still insufficient to explain the reported peak-to-noise ratio of the periodicity, so that extra power on large scales seems required. Dynamic splitting of Gaussian pencil beams in heterogeneity-correction algorithms for radiotherapy with heavy charged particles.

The pencil-beam algorithm is valid only when elementary Gaussian beams are small enough compared to the lateral heterogeneity of a medium, which is not always true in actual radiotherapy with protons and ions. This work addresses a solution for the problem. We found approximate self-similarity of Gaussian distributions, with which Gaussian beams can split into narrower and deflecting daughter b...

Galaxy Statistics in Pencil-beam Surveys at High Redshifts

Surveys of faint galaxies at high redshifts often result in a “pencil-beam” geometry that is much longer along the line-of-sight than across the sky. We explore the effects of this geometry on the abundance and clustering of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman-α emitters (LAEs) based on cosmological N-body simulations which adequately describe the nonlinear growth of structure on small scales...

We derive error estimates in the appropriate norms, for the streamlinediffusion (SD) finite element methods for steady state, energy dependent,Fermi equation in three space dimensions. These estimates yield optimal convergencerates due to the maximal available regularity of the exact solution.High order SD method together with implicit integration are used. The formulationis strongly consistent...

Monte Carlo-based parametrization of the lateral dose spread for clinical treatment planning of scanned proton and carbon ion beams

Ion beam therapy using state-of-the-art pencil-beam scanning offers unprecedented tumour-dose conformality with superior sparing of healthy tissue and critical organs compared to conventional radiation modalities for external treatment of deep-seated tumours. For inverse plan optimization, the commonly employed analytical treatment-planning systems (TPSs) have to meet reasonable compromises in ...
